2022-23 Season - Learn to Fly Fish

In 2022-23 much of my focus will be on introducing new comers to fly fishing. This season will be the third season in which I will be conducting Introduction to Fly Fishing Days in collaboration with Red Tag Trout Tours and Ken Orr’s Orrsome Fly Fishing Adventures.

We have scheduled seven dates across the season, each of them a Saturday:

8 October 5 November 10 December

14 January 4 February 11 March 8 April

The days are designed to introduce you to fly fishing - the gear, the flies, the techniques and the fish. You will be shown the basic principles of casting and the basic principles of fly fishing. And, of course, you’ll be given an opportunity to see if you can catch a wild brown trout.

Our venue is Herne Lodge in Tasmania’s Central Highlands. Herne is a private fishery that was established around 7 years ago. Having been originally stocked with wild brown trout from the Great Lake it now boasts multiple generations of fish that have spawned in Herne’s feeder streams.

The fishery is ideal for learning - very easy to wade, and an easy water to learn to cast on. It has wild brown trout and features many of the insect experiences that the fly fisher is likely to come across during their Tasmanian fly fishing career.

We are able to provide all gear, although of course those of you who have your own are certainly welcome to bring it.

And finally Herne offers the comfort of a lake-side hut with open fire, BBQ facilities. A BBQ lunch is included in the day as are refreshments and snacks over the course of the day. Oh, and there’s even a toilet. And you’ll have a chance to win a great prize from one of our numerous sponsors to help you get on your way as a fly fisher. Check out this YouTube video to get a sense of what Herne offers

The day will cost you $325 and is limited to a maximum of 12 participants on the day, supported by 3 or more professional guides.

Get in touch with me if you’re interested. Or if these dates don’t suit but you are still interested in an opportunity to have a go at fly fishing get in touch with me anyhow and we can see what can be organised on a one-off basis.
