Learning to Fly Fish with the Highland Fly

Rates starting at $990 per day

Learning to fly fish is one of life’s special experiences. Some of us have been lucky enough to have family members of friends happy to devote time to introducing us to the art of the fly. Others do not have access to such an experience and that is where we can come in.

We’re happy to take you on a learn to fly fish journey, whether it’s just for a day to see if you are interested in taking it further, or whether its for a series of days where you might seek to establish your capacity to then tackle your first expedition on your own or with a mate.

A large number of our clients are beginners and, as you will see from our testimonials, the process can be very enjoyable and rewarding.

We can provide a fully personalised learn to fly fish packages for individuals and for groups.

Herne Lodge - Personalised Learn to Fly Fish Instruction

In recent years we have spent many wonderful days helping people discover the joys (and frustrations) of fly fishing. So many of those experiences have been at Herne Lodge, a private fishery on St Patricks Plains in the Tasmanian Central Highlands that offers a perfect setting for the beginning of your fly fishing journey or for experienced anglers to fish on an exclusive trout water with a healthy population of wild brown trout.

Great wet fly fishing at the start of the season, exciting margin fishing when water levels rise, mayfly, spinner, damsel fly and midge hatches - you name it, Herne can offer it.

For a newcomer to fly fishing a day with us at Herne will see you introduced to the gear, the flies, the techniques, the challenges and, hopefully, the enjoyment of fly fishing.

  • We’ll happily work with individuals or groups of beginners.

  • Because of the quality of the fishery, it is also an ideal setting for a learner to accompany an experienced angler or two - after getting the experienced angler(s) underway we’ll happily focus on helping the beginner(s).

  • Are you returning to fly fishing and want a “refresher”? - Herne is the spot.

  • Have you got a larger group of anglers with mixed experience - why not get in touch and arrange a day at Herne. We can always recruit other guides to help out.

Extend your stay

Of course, after a day on Herne, why not consider staying overnight in the Highlands and having a day out with us on our boat on one of the local lakes to use your newly acquired skills or to broaden your Tasmanian trout fishing experience?

So get in touch if you think Herne might be the setting for your first or your next fly fishing experience.
